Movies, music, media, bombard us with what it means to be Black. But is this a reality or is it based on stereotypes? What are the dangers of buying into these images of Black people? Why is Black face in a school’s yearbook offensive? A knowledge of the history of stereotypes will provide the answers to these questions and help to alleviate the one-dimensional expectations that arise due to stereotypes. This presentation features video-clips and images that vividly demonstrate the demeaning nature of stereotypical portrayals past and present, with a particular emphasis on how this impacts Black Canadian students and the Black Canadian population in general.
