Coleen and Greg Birkett describe the path that led them to educational consulting

Honouring Marsha Birkett

The legacy of our sister, Marsha Birkett, is indelibly intertwined with Birkett Educational Consultants. We began our journey as three siblings with a passion for creative and innovative methods of sharing and teaching the Black Canadian experience. Marsha was a trailblazer in Black History education at the school where she taught and the church she attended. In the words of one of her colleagues, “…no one did more to show us and teach us Black History. Students benefited; teachers benefited. She planted that seed within so many of us…”. As we started out together, it was Marsha’s goal, along with ours, to continue to plant that seed within many. She also embraced the cross curricular approach and extended Black history curriculum to include Food, Nutrition, and Family Studies—her areas of specialty.

In loving memeory of Marsha Birkett

Our sister Marsha was intelligent, creative, and fun loving. She had a way of providing wise and succinct responses to some of the challenging situations connected to the work of creating a more inclusive curriculum. Her skills and talents complemented ours and together we shared a strong and unique bond. As we continue this work without her, the strength of our relationship and shared dreams continue to motivate us to give all that we can to this meaningful and necessary work. We often talk and think about what Marsha would have said or done or how she would approach a given task.
Birkett Educational Consultants was officially launched about a month before Marsha passed away. She had the opportunity to contribute to the vision and mandate of the business. For that we are grateful and will continue to honour her legacy and memory through our standard of excellence, the deep thought that goes into all we do, and the fun we have through it all. Marsha was our big sister, our business partner, and best friend. She is deeply missed but her many legacies live on in our name, standards of excellence, and genuine desire to support, inform, and enhance the educational experiences of learners and educators in our global community.
