More Than Meets the Eye: Exploring Race and Diversity in Latin America

Latin America’s 22 countries are home to some of the most ethnically and racially diverse populations in the world! There are racial classifications and ethno-cultural perspectives that are unique to this region. However, Latin America cannot be viewed as a monolith. Each country has its own social traditions, attitudes and approaches to race and race relations. These practices are shaped by a past of colonization, enslavement, classicism, and racism. More Than Meets the Eye uses multimedia, current events, pop culture and history to examine racial and social dynamics in Latin American countries. An emphasis is placed on the history and current experiences of the African population in this region. Enslavement, racism, marginalization, and government initiatives to erase African people and their contributions is vital in understanding Latin American societies. The presentation includes insight from professors to rappers to engage and educate audiences. Energetic delivery and captivating content enable students and educators to realize that Latin American heritage is so much “more than meets the eye”!

It is often believed that any significant Black presence in Canada began with the influx of immigrants coming from the Caribbean and Africa between 1960s and the 1990s. There are several Black Canadian communities pre-dating this time frame that are often forgotten. These communities played important roles in building Canada as a nation, while producing legendary individuals who impacted the world in the areas of medicine and science, politics, music, sports, education and more. Learn about the locations and the contributions of these vibrant communities from the Maritimes and Quebec and Ontario, to the prairies and British Columbia, in a presentation or a workshop series that is guaranteed to change or enhance your view of Canada both past and present.
