The Follow Through: How to Finish What You’ve Started (Grades 9 to 10)

Students are bombarded with social media and peeks into the lives of celebrities. Sometimes, it can seem “cool” to be unreliable or irresponsible. But there are consequences for all of our choices. This collection will allow students to reflect on how their actions impact others both negatively and positively. Through tools such as the “If, Then, So” chart, learners are challenged to thoroughly consider the effects of their personal choices. Other aspects of the collection highlight the reasons as well as the outcomes of following through with promises and commitments. By the end of the collection, students will be inspired to re-evaluate past behaviours and move forward with the mindset of following through and keeping promises.

Doing Good Makes Me Feel Good: The Art and Science of Kindness (Grades 9 to 10)

Media and society often push the “me first” attitude to the forefront. We are bombarded with messages that encourage us to look out for ourselves and to get ahead by any means necessary, even at the expense of ignoring or even hurting others. It is becoming more challenging to find the merit in being kind to others just for the sake of being kind and not expecting something in return. This inquiry-based collection enables students to explore not only the benefits to the person on the receiving end of a good deed, but also the benefits to the giver. Through a variety of activities ranging from reflective responses to information presented in videos, articles, and songs, students will use critical thinking and communication skills to demonstrate understanding of the material. Engaging with the information and ideas presented in this collection, students will be encouraged to participate in civic action and acts of positive global citizenship.

Get SMART! Making Your Goals a Reality

There are so many distractions vying for the attention of our students. This can make the discipline and focus necessary for goal setting and achievement more challenging than ever before and less of a priority in the eyes of students. The frustration and discouragement when desired goals or expectations are not achieved can greatly impact student mental health and well-being. Providing students with the necessary skills to make achievable short- and long-term goals builds self-esteem and leads to an increase in achieving desired outcomes. This collection introduces the principles of SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-bound) and how to create them. After completing this collection, students will be equipped with strategies and skills to make them better goal-setters and achievers in both their academic and personal lives.
