Greg Birkett

Education Consultant

Greg Birkett is a distinguished author, educator, and playwright, whose contributions span multiple facets of education and literature. As a co-author of Black History: Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas (Emond Montgomery Publications) and The Great Black North Poetry Anthology (Frontenac House Poetry), Greg has established himself as a pivotal voice in Black history and literature.

Recognized for his excellence in teaching, Greg was a finalist for the Governor-General Award for Teaching Excellence in 2011 and received the A.H.E.N. Excellence in Teaching Award in 2016. His expertise in curriculum development is demonstrated through his work with the Ontario Ministry of Education and his role as a curriculum consultant for the Ontario Black History Society (OBHS).

In addition to his educational achievements, Greg is a Senior Writer for the CBC Kids website and has contributed freelance pieces to the Toronto Star. He is a sought-after speaker on issues related to anti-Black racism, having appeared on CityTV News, Breakfast Television, Global News, and CTV News to discuss its impact on the education system and potential solutions.

Greg's talent extends to the performing arts as a poet and playwright. His plays, Do You Remember Me and Pieces of a Black Woman’s Soul, were showcased at the Toronto Fringe Festival and the Sandbox Theatre in downtown Toronto, respectively.

Greg is also the co-developer and co-presenter of See Us, Learn Us: Teaching the Black Canadian Experience, a national webinar for educators and education stakeholders, in collaboration with Nelson Education. He continues to develop educational materials and resources for Nelson’s digital learning ecosystem, Edwin, contributing to the advancement of inclusive and comprehensive educational content.

Coleen Birkett

Education Consultant

Coleen Birkett is an esteemed educator with over twenty years of classroom experience, whose contributions have significantly impacted diverse educational communities. As a freelance writer, Coleen has authored numerous articles for community publications and coauthored the textbook Black History: Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas, which is utilized in school boards throughout the Greater Toronto Area, Nova Scotia, and Bermuda.

Coleen plays a pivotal role in leading the development, organization, and facilitation of highly successful educational forums for youth during Black Heritage Month. Her extensive teaching experience spans across Central America, Toronto, and Bermuda, encompassing both public and private schools. Additionally, Coleen has developed and presented workshops for educators in West Africa and Bermuda, showcasing her commitment to global education.

In 2009, Coleen was honored with the Award for Excellence in Teaching for her outstanding work in Bermuda. She has also served as an Instructional Coach for the Toronto District School Board’s Literacy and Numeracy initiative. Her expertise was further recognized when she was selected as a member of an evaluation team to assess the eligibility of a private school in New York for accreditation.

Coleen is the co-developer and co-presenter of See Us, Learn Us: Teaching the Black Canadian Experience, a nationwide webinar for educators in collaboration with Nelson Education. Currently, she is involved in writing resources for Nelson Education based on the material presented in the See Us, Learn Us webinar, continuing her dedication to advancing inclusive and comprehensive educational content.
